Connecting School Mental Health and Positive Behavior Supports

Description

This practice group is a conduit for families, researchers,

administrators, and practitioners to find common interests and practices

related to SMH and PBS. PBS approaches are designed to prevent

problem behaviors by proactively altering the environment before

problems begin and concurrently teaching appropriate behavior.

School-wide positive behavior support systems support all students

along a continuum of need based on the three-tiered PBS prevention

model. SMH can be thought of as a framework of approaches

that promote children’s mental health by emphasizing prevention

programming, positive youth development and school-wide

approaches. These approaches call for collaboration among mental

health providers, educators, families, related service providers and

school administrators in order to meet the mental health needs of all

students.  By working collaboratively, this practice group seeks to

clarify the relationship between PBS and SMH in order to promote

seamless practice at the local level.

* Invitation to develop a Dialogue Guide on PBS, School Mental Health and Systems of Care
Posted on Monday 29th March 2010, 5:24pm by Susan Bazyk
Greetings, members of Connecting School Mental Health and Positive Behavioral Supports Practice Group! You are invited to take part in the development of a Dialogue Guide focusing on PBS, School Mental Health, and Systems of Care.

What is a Dialogue Guide? Dialogue Guides are tools designed by the IDEA Partnership to foster interactive discussions across stakeholders. The purpose of these tools is to promote open dialogue regarding an issue of high interest to the education community. The aim is to examine assumptions, seek common ground, and generate joint action surrounding the given topic. If you are not familiar with Dialogue Guides, please check out some at: http://www.ideapartnership.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=35&Itemid=111

What will you be asked to do if you agree to participate? Within the next 4-6 weeks, you’ll be asked to do the following:
1. Read and reflect on a topical brief about the issue - mental health and PBS (4 pages). Refer to http://www.bazelon.org/pdf/WayToGo1.pdf (this Brief will also be posted on the SharedWork site)
2. Generate 2-3 reaction and application questions that will be used to share perspectives and consider action
3. Participate in a 1 hour conference call to finalize the Dialogue Guide questions (during the week of April 12th or 19th)
4. Review the draft questions and send edits to the team leader

If you are interested in participating to the development of this Dialogue Guide, please email Susan Bazyk (moderator of the PBS group) by Friday, April 2nd .
